Bussan Lull

I dedicate this post to all lucid dreamers like me, who always count to minus two fish…

(nothing to see here but music)

how copyright created new song

Unfortunately, even though everyone I spoke to said that it was an “old folk tune” and a classic Swedish lullaby, no one actually knew if it was in the public domain or not. The internet also didn’t seem to know. When I contacted Ulrika Gunnarsson at the Center for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research, I found out that even they didn’t know 100%. According to them, it turns out that the first verse to the song is unquestionably ancient, but that the subsequent verses might actually have been written by a Swedish folk musicologist named Evert Taube.

This posed a problem since I can’t record anything that isn’t in the public domain without having to pay for the rights to it, but I can’t write more verses myself since I don’t speak Swedish.

The solution again came in the form of Lisa. I explained the situation for Lisa, a bit about the story of the game, and she then wrote a second verse for the song that specifically references Sofi’s relationship with her Grandmother and the journey she goes on to find her.

full text of original song:

:|: Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
där kommer tre vandringsmän på vägen. :|:
Den ene, ack så halt,
den andre, o så blind,
den tredje säger alls ingenting.

:|: Byssan lull — boil the full kettle,
three wanderers are coming down the road. :|:
The first one is limping,
the second one is blind,
the third one doesn’t say anything.

2. :|: Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
på himmelen vandra tre stjärnor. :|:
Den ena är så vit,
den andra är så röd,
den tredje är månen den gula.

:|: Byssan lull — boil the full kettle,
in the sky three stars are wandering. :|:
The first one is so white,
the second one is so red,
the third one is the yellow moon.

3. :|: Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
där blåser tre vindar på haven, :|:
på Stora ocean,
på lilla Skagerack
och långt upp i Bottniska viken.

:|: Byssan lull — boil the full kettle,
three winds are blowing at sea. :|:
One the great ocean,
on the little Skagerrak,
and far up on the gulf of Bothnia.

4. :|: Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
där segla tre skutor på vågen. :|:
Den första är en bark,
den andra är en brigg,
den tredje har så trasiga segel.

:|: Byssan lull — boil the full kettle,
three sailing ships are sailing here. :|:
The first one is a barque,
the second one is a brig,
the third one has ragged sails.

5. :|: Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
sjökistan har trenne figurer. :|:
Den första är vår tro,
den andra är vårt hopp,
den tredje är kärleken, den röda.

:|: Byssan lull — boil the full kettle,
the treasure chest has three figures. :|:
The first one is our faith
the second one is hope,
the third one is the red love.

6. :|: Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
tre äro tingena de goda. :|:
Den första är Gud Far,
den andra är hans Son,
den tredje mild Jungfru Maria.

:|: Byssan lull — boil the full kettle,
there are three good things. :|:
The first one is God our Father,
the second is his Son,
the third one is the mild Virgin Mary.

Lucidity version text:

“Byssan Lull” – traditional, arr. Jesse Harlin

Byssan lull, koka kittelen full
där kommer tre vandringsmän på vägen
byssan lull, koka kittelen full
där kommer tre vandringsmän på vägen
Den ene, e så halt
den andre, e så blind
den tredje har så trasiga kläder
Byssan lull, koka kittelen full
så kyligt på vintern de reser
byssan lull, koka kittelen full
tre stärnor som lyser genom skogen
den första är vårt lugn
den andra är vår dröm
i tredje båten sitter vi tillsammans

[English Translation]

Byssan Lull, boil the full pot
so cold in the winter, they are traveling
Byssan Lull, boil the full pot
three stars shine through the forest
the first is our calm the second is our dream
in the third boat, we sit together
Byssan Lull, boil the full pot
all alone in the world you are searching
Byssan Lull, boil the full pot
I will take care of you on the trip
I hold you so close and warm you up lovingly
I promise to always come with you
